Art & Writing Contests

The Friends of the Cerritos Library conduct an Annual Art & Writing Contest for Children in grades K-6 and a short story contest for children in grades 3-6. Holding these contests is our way of encouraging children to explore their talents and be proud of their achievements.

The Friends of the Cerritos Library also conduct Annual Contests for Talented Teens to encourage teens to explore their talents. The contests in poetry, art, short story and photography are open to all students with valid Cerritos Library cards attending grades 7 through 12.

Library Book Sales

The Friends hold a book sale every year in both the spring and the fall. A great selection of books is available at bargain prices. A Members Only Presale is held on Friday evening. Membership to the Friends' group is available at the door on Friday evening. The General Sale starts on Saturday, with a “$2 a Bag Sale” on Sunday.

Mystery on the Menu Luncheon

This year the Friends will host their 10th annual Mystery on the Menu Luncheon at the Cerritos Library. There will be a panel of 15 mystery authors who will all be signing books and giving talks.

Romance Tea

On alternate years the Friends host a Romance Tea with a panel authors. Guests enjoy tea, sandwiches, dessert and a lively discussion about romance novels and the romance industry.

Scholastic Book Fair

Each year, to kick off the Summer Reading Program, the Friends hold a Scholastic Book Fair. An excellent
selection of books and other educational materials attracts book lovers of all ages. Clifford, the Big Red Dog, has been known to make a special appearance. Proceeds from the Scholastic Book Fair help purchase book prizes for the Summer Reading Program.

Summer Reading Program

The Friends of the Cerritos Library have sponsored the Summer Reading Program since the summer of 1974. Over the years, they have provided book prizes and have promoted reading and a love for books among children. Since 1997 young adults have had their own reading program and in 2001 an adult program was added.The number of people participating continues to rise. This program makes summer the busiest part of the year.
