King of the Butterflies

During his reign, John II Casimir, King of Poland, declared that 2 million butterflies be captured and sent up to God as an offering of the Earth’s bounty. This elegant presentation captures the delightful beauty of the butterfly in a single photo engraving that accompanies the text.

Denise Brady and Christopher Howell produced this book at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. The poem is printed from handset Centaur type and illustrated with a photoengraved print. The title page bears a linocut initial printed in red. The black cover and red endsheet papers were handmade from cotton fabrics, and white Burga was used for the text.
