Rita MacDonald

Book art image

Family

Family was created by Rita MacDonald and Melissa Smedley. The piece is housed in a wooden box with a front door that opens to reveal a series of images of household utensils. The utensils symbolize portraits of individual family members. On alternating pages, the images are layered over definitions of the roles to which the family members are predestined. Family investigates the idea of the family unit as a tool of socialization.  The piece was printed on Gutenberg Laid paper at Bread & Bone Books Studio in New York. The project was funded by the New York State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
